Homework Each week, I will post and send home a class newsletter that contains information about things we are learning in class, a reading log, and an addition assignment to strengthen the skills we are learning in class. The reading log and additional assignment are expected to be filled out completely and returned on the last school day of every week.
Reading Each week, your child will be asked to read for 20 minutes Monday through Thursday. This is the most important part of the homework. You may choose to read to your child, have your child read to you, or have your child read to a sibling, stuffed animal, dog, etc. Listening to you read will be a great model of the fluency we are working on building. Fluency is "reading like you talk" with proper expression, speed, and accuracy. When your child reads, he or she is practicing fluency. Don't be surprised if he or she asks to read the same book again and again. It's ok.....this will build fluency as well. Additional Assignment There will usually be another sheet stapled to the reading log that includes an activity or practice page that relates to what we are learning about in class. Sometimes it is a project that we will be sharing on Friday. Often times, there will be a writing portion. Please have your child do the writing. Your child may spell words incorrectly, but that is ok. First graders write phonetically: they write what they hear. Encourage your child to use capitals, periods, and spaces correctly in his or her writing homework. I encourage you to work with your child in completing the work as needed and returning it to school on time. Building good homework habits is an important study skill! |
